[417] Washington Elementary School of Alameda CA boy ghost haunt
Tale, local urban legend, or a genuine ghost haunting at this Elementary school in Alameda, CA. Originally built in 1909, then rebuilt on site, and reopened in 1957 lies Washington Elementary School. The school is rumored to be haunted by the ghost / spirit of a 13 year old boy. According to the story, during a series of remodel - renovations to the school, a boy either by accident or purpose strayed into an off limits area. A section of temporary flooring gave way, or was missing and the boy accidentally fell down the deep dark hole. One version of the story suggests the boy was awake but unable to get out of the hole, the second variant suggests he was unconscious during the event. In either case, the construction workers unaware of the boy filled the hole with cement. The cement structure incorporated some sort of draining hole? The child survives until that hole also is filled with cement. Some time later the boy's body was found in the hole. The boys spirit seems tied to room 13. People that visit room 13 are subject to cold spots and chills. supposedly, Students and teachers report the deep feelings of dread in the area where the boy died. Scratching, knocking, and bangs have been witnessed from the same hallway. Mysterious shadows figures flutter through corridors, particularly on full moons.
Factual Basis:
During the 1990's a series of school funding propositions were passed through out California. Washington Elementary School of Alameda CA had severe infrastructure issues noted during a school district facility audit. Some upgrades to the facility did occur during the 1990's. In 2000 A independent survey of the Washington Elementary School of Alameda CA listed necessary mediate improvements:
1. Repair/replace roofing
2. Repair/replace heating, ventilation, electrical, plumbing systems
3. Upgrade emergency/security/technology/lighting systems
4. Upgrade fire alarms
5. Renovate student restrooms
6. Repair/renovate classrooms, buildings, windows, walls/ doors
7. Hazardous materials abatement
8. Install clock and bell system, closed circuit TV
*9. Upgrade paving, landscaping and fencing
10.Upgrade playgrounds with safety improvement
The renovations were complete as of 2006 according to the 05-06 Sarc (school accountability report card) report. The earliest account of this haunting seems to be around 2003. A plausible connection seems to exist to the 1990 school upgrades. We at San Diego Haunted were unable to find any record of injury or death as recorded in this story however, other injuries and deaths (back into the 1909 school) may exist. Line 9 of the year 2000 remodel list is of interest
as paving and landscape were addressed. Claire , a library technician, "I did a Talk at our public Library about Hauntings that are not...Washington School is one of them...just a Urban Legend." posted November 2 at 4:24pm Facebook.
