[424] Altadena California Zane Grey Mansion ghost haunt

Altadena California Zane Grey Mansion ghost haunt.

Brief History:

Born Pearl Zane Gray January 31, 1872 Zane Grey the man accomplished many feats which included being a minor league baseball player, opening a dentist practice, and eventually a successful writing career. Grey's personal life was riddled with his own demons. Gray was a womanizer, he suffered bouts of depression, anger, and uncontrollable mood swings. In 1905 Zane married Lina Roth better known as "Dolly." During their courtship Zane had been clear he would continue his infidelities even after marriage. Dolly managed her husband's career and raised their three children. Dolly knew of Zane infidelities, she loved him nonetheless and believed it was his handicap. There's considerable evidence they shared a lasting love for each other even under such circumstances. In 1920 the Greys settled in Altadena, California. They purchased a prominent mansion on East Mariposa Street. The mansion was designed by Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey (of no relation). "In Altadena I have found those qualities that make life worth living," Zane grey. It was in Altadena that Zane consummated his love with mistress Brenda Montenegro. Zane grey passed away October 23, 1939.

"There’s a lot of Internet chatter about the house being haunted— mostly you’ll read reports of mysterious “cold spots” in corners or stairways— but the thing is, the house is concrete. It has high ceilings and large rooms. It stays cooler than your average house in the summer. It can get really cold in the winter. So I don’t think there’s a whole lot of mystery in dropped temperatures around here.

My only two mysterious house events are that one, a year back I had a dream that I wanted to shut my refrigerator door, but Zane’s ghost was unhappy about this, and kept repeatedly opening it. I woke up and told my boyfriend the dream, then we went into the kitchen to have breakfast. The fridge opened while we were at the table. I got up and shut it firmly. It opened again. This happened about ten times in a row. We were both pretty impressed with me.

Two, the day after my boyfriend and I expanded into the new bedroom, we came back from dinner and found a woman’s longish wool skirt lying on the floor. It wasn’t mine, wasn’t my size. We showed it to my landlords; it wasn’t theirs. All the doors of the house had been locked, and my landlords hadn’t even been home. Ultimately, I believe we decided that the estate cat did it, although we’re still not clear where he got the skirt from.

The best ghost story comes from my landlord, Steve, who has lived in the house on and off since 1970, when his parents bought the estate from Romer Grey (the place was a complete mess, with sixty tons of vines climbing in the windows.)

Covered in Vines
When Steve was a teenager, he used to take his dates into Zane’s east wing study, where Zane wrote because it’s so private. There’s only one way in and one way out of that part of the house, and word is that Zane wanted it built that way not only so he could work uninterrupted, but also so he could have sex with his various lady assistants while his wife was in the other part of the house. Supposedly his wife was okay with this arrangement or, at least, philosophically hoped to be.

The East Wing Passageway
Anyway, Steve says that there are at least two times when, as he was starting to get into really making out with a girl, the two of them would very clearly hear heels clicking across the passageway to the east wing and across the entry room to the study. Steve’s parents would both be in bed by that point, but his mom didn’t even wear heels. He says that the heel clicking was always very sharp, scaring the shit out of him and the girl, and he came to believe that they were the footsteps of Zane’s widow, unable to stop herself from interrupting her husband (now played by Steve) with yet another woman.
